Uh, oh! Mountain Cedar taking its toll...

************Revision below *************
The Lord knows all. He knew this weekend I would be calling my surgeon to see if it was okay to load up on Sudafed and Allegra before surgery.  It seems the record levels of Mountain Cedar in the air have left me with scratchy throat, congestion, sneezing and coughing.

He also knew that I would be going in for my all of my pre-op testing today...seeing multiple docs who will be able to decide if with these symptoms it might be wise to postpone surgery.  You see, my pre-op had been scheduled for last Wednesday. However, after many phone calls and requests, I rescheduled it for today so I could drive Lily's field trip last week instead. It meant so much to her and I was glad I had gone through the trouble of rescheduling.  I felt totally healthy last Wednesday...so I am thankful that it is today that I am going in and they can make some decisions about how I am feeling.

Would you pray along with us? It would be really hard on me for surgery to be postponed as I know it would take weeks for them to reschedule. I am ready. But I also know that God is in control and He may have some other purpose to accomplish.  Please pray that the Lord's will would be done.

Speaking of prayer...the elders of our church anointed me with oil and prayed over me yesterday.  It was a beautiful, peace bringing, and moving time for Jerry and myself.  Our senior pastor also mentioned to Jerry that people will be praying in our church's chapel throughout the day of my surgery.  Wow.  So humbled and thankful.

Off to pre-op testing...fun, fun!

************ Revised at 5:00 PM ********************
Pre-op complete.  The docs were concerned, but not overly, about my symptoms.  If fever develops surgery won't happen.  If I wake up feeling crummy Thursday I still go in.  Basically the anesthesiologist will listen to my lungs closely and will make the final call.

I did learn that I might be intubated overnight in ICU which totally freaks me out.  :( Major surgery on my head and I am more worried about intubation and catheters.  Go figure.

To leave you on a funny note, I have to tell you about my labs.  They drew 5 vials of blood and then asked if I could give a urine specimen.  Of course I had just used the restroom.  So they poured me cup after cup of water and about an hour later sent me in with a specimen cup.  I totally went and flushed and then caught eye of the unopened cup sitting there.  Seriously.  Where is my head?

Thankful to be at peace...

Well, surgery keeps getting closer! First the calendar turned to February, and now we are actually less than a week out. Some fun things we were looking forward to (a night away and Jerry being announced in his new role) have come and gone and now the next big thing is actually the surgery.

I have been doing remarkably well, even emotionally.  I finally do have peace...which if you know me and what an awful patient I am...it is definitely an inexplicable peace from the Lord. I feel completely carried by the prayers of many.

I did have a moment of tears on Monday.  I am not sure why, but it really hit me hard when I was called with the exact time of my surgery.  I have known the date of 2/14 for weeks, and of course assumed early morning because of its length. However, when she said your surgery is scheduled for 7am and you need to report at 5am, it all of a sudden became a bit too real!

We continue to praise the Lord for the Body of Christ which has come around us in unimaginable ways. It has truly been an experience like no other and we are so grateful.

One hard thing I have been facing is that it has become difficult for me to pray for myself regarding the surgery. It simply causes anxiety to verbalize the requests. I am thankful to be able to rest in the promises of Romans 8:26-28:

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

A sweet friend who was also recently diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma (what are the odds!?!), asked if I had thought of setting up a prayer signup for people to pray in increments during the surgery.  I had not thought of that, but alas, with Danielle's great idea and the beauty of sign up genius...here you go!

I would be so honored by your prayers during the operation...that the Lord would keep me and grant me protection. Please continue to pray that I would remain healthy until then as well...I feel a cold coming on. :(

Also, I plan to go back and record some of my experiences with this journey over the weekend...it is therapeutic! Plus there is a whole Acoustic Neuroma Association that points people to blogs like this as a way to navigate the process. So if you are subscribed you may see some random posts back dated to November and December.

Surgery Scheduled...Prayer Requests

First of all, thank you so much for your e-mails, calls, provision of meals, etc last month as we were walking through a dark time of sleepless nights and hard decision making.  We truly felt carried by the body of Christ.  I am not attempting to get back to each individual kind message, but please know that your words, quotes of scripture and encouragement were (and still are) treasured.

Before I give an update, one quick thing:
Many of you have asked how to get updates now and after surgery.  I used to blog here on a regular basis, and am going to revive it as a place to post prayer requests and progress after surgery. You can subscribe to it via e-mail on the top left. This is easier on your computer, but from your phone you have to scroll down and click "view web version" first. You do have to confirm your subscription, but I promise it will only e-mail you if there is an update! Jerry will update this after the surgery...maybe even during it, what else will he have to do during those 8-10 hours! ;)  I also plan to go back and document the diagnosis and decision making process at some point just because it is therapeutic for me.

Update:
My apologies for our silence.  We spent December seeing more doctors and letting the steroids get out of my system.  Praise the Lord that normal nights of sleep have returned.  Wow! So sorry to anyone who interacted with me during that time, I was a weepy mess! Sleep is wonderful.  After meeting with two surgeons earlier in the month, we then met with a radiation oncologist to discuss radiating the acoustic neuroma. This seemed like an encouraging option for a while especially with my blood disorder possibly complicating surgery.  We then saw the hematologist and she gave the green light for surgery.  We are thankful that though the Factor V Leiden deficiency does put me at higher risk for clots, etc...it isn't enough of a risk to preclude surgery.  Eventually we were persuaded against radiation because of unknown future side affects, the size of the tumor (3cm), its proximity to the brain stem and my young age. So after much prayer and counsel we decided to go ahead with surgery here in Dallas through UT Southwestern at Zale Lipshy.

The date:
I had to laugh when the surgeons said it could be done sooner, but they wanted to find a date when neither of them had a lot of other things going on.  WELL, thank you! It is an 8-10 hour ordeal, so I guess in theory they would have lots of time to do "other" things. ;) So, the date when they were both free is Valentines Day!  Yep, the surgery is scheduled for 2/14.  Valentines night in the ICU. Fun, fun. The surgeons are Dr. Bruce Mickey and Dr. Walt Kutz.  They have been so responsive and we are so thankful to God for them. They are using the translabyrinthine approach  which will leave me with no hearing or balance nerve on my left side.  Though the hearing loss will be tough, God made our bodies so amazing--my right balance nerve will eventually compensate in absence of the other one. I will be in ICU for 1 or maybe 2 nights and in the hospital a total of 5 days barring any significant complications. I will have physical therapy to regain my balance and hope to return to driving and life 4-6 weeks post op.

Prayer Requests:
  • Health for me and my family so surgery doesn't get postponed
  • Our girls' emotional health-that they wouldn't feel bounced around between family and friends
  • Strength for Jerry as he leads us through all of this
  • Sweet times with the Lord
  • Guidance of the surgeons' hands and their entire team--including some residents/fellows that will also take part
  • Pray that my facial nerve will be preserved
  • That my blood clotting disorder would pose no problems (going off aspirin 10 days pre-op)
  • That I would tolerate the anesthesia for the 8-10 hour surgery
  • Pray against infection and the following possible complications/side effects:
    • facial numbness/weakness/paralysis
    • difficult eye movement/blinking
    • trouble swallowing/change in taste
    • spinal fluid leak (could keep me in hospital additional 5 days if shunt has to be placed)
  • That the post op dizziness/intense vertigo would be short lived
  • That I would come to terms with being deaf on my left side :(
  • ULTIMATELY, that we would be a good witness to the medical staff and glorify God in the process
A somewhat unrelated request is for the other tumor they found on my scan.  It is another benign type--a meningioma--and is also about 3cm. It is sitting on the top of my brain near the superior saggital sinus.  In case you are like me and clueless about what that is--it is a large vein in the brain that takes blood back to the heart.  We are thankful that it is not causing any symptoms so we can just watch it. Would love your bold prayers that this tumor would STOP growing, NOT present symptoms, and NOT have to be removed.

Probably the sweetest thing for us as parents has been seeing our girls come around me with honest prayers, strong hugs and even hard questions.  Our 8 year old Lily has made Psalm 46:1 the theme verse for this season as she recites it over me almost nightly.  I will leave you with it----

Psalm 46:1-2a God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear...

Much love,
Kerry for the Gibsons

Bluebonnet Beauties

There was some crazy weather here in Texas today. I am glad we decided to head out for some bluebonnet pictures late Sunday, because I am sure they were beat up pretty badly in the storms today! Our girls love this tradition...
